Dartford v Hereford United

Dartford return to home action on Saturday as they host former football league side Hereford United.

The Darts last played the Bulls thirty years ago, a month after Hereford United’s famous F.A Cup giant killing act against Newcastle United. Dartford were beaten 1-0 at Watling Street in the Southern League fixture, a division the Bulls would escape at the end of the season after finishing runners up.

In the same season Dartford knocked the Herefordshire club out of the F.A Trophy by the same scoreline at Edgar Street. At the time the result avenged a 3-0 reverse at the tail end of 1971. The clubs are evenly poised with ten wins apiece against each other and 20 stalemates.

Dartford’s best winning streak in the Conference Premier came to an end on the weekend with a 2-0 defeat at Gateshead. After a gruelling four weeks and a long journey North goals from Micky Cummins and Josh Gilles inflicted a fourth defeat of the season. The Heed dominated proceedings with plenty of possession and eventually managed to break down an organised yet tired Dartford team. Saturday’s set back leaves Tony Burman’s men in tenth position and a point behind this weekend’s opponents.

Hereford United meanwhile were humbled at newly promoted Hyde despite taking a five minute lead when Ryan Bowman nodded home. Scott Spencer, Alex Brown and former Evertonian Phil Jevons put the hosts in command before Bowman netted his second. Jevons completed his hat trick with two more goals to condemn the Bulls to a 5-2 defeat.

Manager, Martin Foyle was disappointed with his team’s third loss in four matches and felt his side made big mistakes. The former Port Vale striker ensured Hereford United got off to a promising start by beating fellow relegated club Macclesfield Town in the Conference Premier’s season opener. A draw at Tamworth was followed by victories against Alfreton Town and Ebbsfleet United before the recent slump.

One player the Darts will be familiar with is Harry Pell who played on loan at Hastings United two years ago. The 21 year old midfielder impressed against Dartford and now has 53 Hereford appearances under his belt too. Up front, the Bulls have strikers Sean Canham and Ryan Bowman as well as midfielder Marley Watkins sharing the lead with three goals.

After three successive wins at Princes Park the Darts will aim to take another scalp and leap frog their opponents in the current standings.

Team News

Danny Harris was rested last weekend after injury ruled him out. Louis Wells remains sidelined and Adam Green has missed the last four league games.

Martin Foyle has extended the loan spell of Tom Nichols from Exeter City. The 19 year old striker has made eight appearances, four starts and four as a substitute, scoring once against Alfreton Town.
