Dartford v Uxbridge

Dartford aim to put consecutive defeats behind them in this weekend’s F.A Cup tie against Uxbridge.

After defeats at Oxford City and at home to Truro City in the last week, the Darts will be desperate to avoid a cup upset at the second qualifying round stage.

Tony Burman stated his team ‘lacked desire’ against Truro City last weekend as they lost 1-0 at Princes Park. On Tuesday, despite the Darts leading through Andy Pugh, Oxford City turned the match around with two second half goals.

More creativity may return to the side as Jack Simmons is hoping to be fit soon. The winger has been out with injury for the whole of this month but is making good progress. Danny Harris should be available again as he was left out of the squad last weekend due to illness, whilst Barry Cogan has been nursing a shoulder injury, aggravated in the defeat at Oxford City. Ben Francis became the latest academy player from the Dartford production line to make his first appearance, coming off the bench against Truro City.

Burman’s side made it to the second round proper last term earning a trip to Bradford City. Relegation from the National League has meant joining the competition early, and having to negotiate three rounds to get to the proper stages.

Whilst Dartford enter the competition at this point for the first time in four years, Uxbridge have not made it past the second qualifying round in 15 years. Playing two divisions below in the Southern Division One Central, the Reds have made it to this round five times since the start of the millennium.

The Darts have a poor record against Uxbridge with their only win coming 119 years ago. Since then, the Reds have won six and drawn one out of seven, the last victory coming nine years ago at Stonebridge Road. Back then, Burman was in charge for his first full season back at the helm, as the club played its final campaign prior the move to Princes Park.

Uxbridge are without an away win in the league and like Dartford sit in mid table. The Reds however, did pick up an away victory in the first qualifying round.

A trip to Heybridge Swifts started well, after seven minutes Luke Henegan put Uxbridge in the lead. Both sides missed penalties before the first half concluded, but there was more to come from the spot. Southern League Division One Central top scorer, Matt Woods scored a penalty and so did Heybridge Swifts’ Josh Fagbohun. With the home side pressing for an equaliser, Zak Joseph sealed a 3-1 win to put Tony Choules’ team into the next round.

Uxbridge’s F.A Cup campaign started in the preliminary stage almost a month ago. Henegan was the hero with four minutes to go, scoring the winner to prevent an early cup upset against Northampton Spencer of the United Counties Premier league.

The Reds finished twelfth in last season’s league campaign and are currently one position higher this time. In the two season’s before that they managed to finish in tenth and eleventh. Another consistent statistic is the reliability of top scorer Matt Woods, the striker scored 20 goals last term, including five in cup competitions. The 28 year old netted an impressive 32 times two years ago in 37 appearances.

It’s been ten years since Dartford lost to opposition from a lower league in the F.A Cup, the Darts will hope to stretch that record to another season.

On This Day

Six years ago the Darts were involved in a F.A Cup tie against Worthing. A 2-1 win ensured Dartford progressed to the third qualifying round with goals from Elliot Bradbrook and Jay May. Chelmsford City knocked Dartford out in the next round, the Clarets were also the last team to beat the Darts on 26 September back in 1970. Since reforming, the Darts drew 0-0 with Brackley Town in 1998 and beat Ilford 1-0 in 2007 both away from home. The last home match on this day was 28 years ago when Southern Premier league fixture with Gosport Borough ended 2-2.
