Dartford v Alfreton Town

Dartford will host Alfreton Town for the first time on Saturday as the Darts look to make it three wins in a row.

In contrast to the opening week of the season where Tony Burman’s men suffered three straight defeats, Dartford bounced back with two excellent results.

On Saturday the Darts recorded their first Conference Premier win in 26 years thanks to a bullet header by Lee Burns. The versatile Burns came on as a substitue and his goal was enough to beat Kidderminster Harriers.

Two days later unbeaten Cambridge United welcomed Dartford at their Abbey Stadium. Last season’s top scorer Danny Harris opened his account and the scoring with a speculative effort. The U’s hit back from the spot five minutes from time after Dartford conceded their third penalty of 2012/2013. However it was summer signing Nathan Collier who grabbed the winner in the 88th minute beating Craig Ross, his former goalkeeper at Hampton and Richmond with a deflected shot.

The win has moved the Darts up to fourteenth and seven places above Saturday’s opponents Alfreton Town. The Derbyshire club started of slow this season which will not deter them in their second season at the top of non league football. Last campaign the Reds picked up just ten points in the first 19 matches before finishing the campaign in fifteenth.

Nicky Law’s team have lost every other fixture starting on the opening weekend of the season. Sandwiched between the defeats against Stockport County (0-1), Hereford United (0-3) and Nuneaton Town (0-3) the Derbyshire club drew 3-3 with Southport and beat Barrow 3-1. Alfreton Town have yet to record an away victory this term and so far Paul Clayton with four and Ben Tomlinson with two have scored all of their goals.

After seven years in the Conference North Alfreton Town tasted Conference Premier football for the first time last season so Law will know what it is like for newly promoted clubs, about Dartford he commented: “It will be another tough game. They have been sort of up and down like we are, and by all accounts they played really well at Cambridge United on Monday”.

Marcus Bettinelli will continue between the sticks for the injured Louis Wells. Full back Adam Green was substituted on Saturday with an injury and took no part in Monday’s win at Cambridge United.

Nicky Law has no injury worries but striker Tom Denton completes a three-match suspension. Nathan Arnold should be  fit after missing the Barrow game with a chest infection. Law may also look into the loan market before the transfer deadline.
