Hereford United v Dartford

Dartford travel east to west on the weekend to take on Hereford United in an attempt to end an away streak of four games without a win.

The Darts last visited Edgar Street in March and left with no points to take home. Josh O’Keefe’s winning goal after 38 minutes was enough to separate the sides. The midfielder who ended up with a dozen league goals last term finished neatly to earn Hereford United all three points. Moments after falling behind Mark Arber was sent off for bringing down Ryan Bowman, the Bulls top scorer for 2012/13 picked himself up to take the penalty, only to be denied a goal by Louis Wells.

On Tuesday, Tony Burman handed a début to on loan Scunthorpe United striker Matthew Godden. However it was the visitors Salisbury City who took the lead with a wonderful 30 yard strike from Theo Lewis, his third goal of the season. The lead lasted just 12 minutes when Godden netted in his first game following up his own rebound.

The Darts new striker is determined to make his time count at Princes Park claiming ‘it’s a massive year’ for him to prove he can play at a higher level. When speaking to BBC Radio Kent he said: “Whether I’m playing in Scunthorpe’s first team because I’ve impressed when I’ve gone back or impressed other clubs, that’s my main aim when I’m here”. Godden is also optimistic he can settle in with his new team-mates, he added: “By the looks of the lads, the manager, the surroundings, I can’t see myself not being happy here”.

The Bulls finished a creditable sixth back in April, this time they sit ten places lower and two points ahead of the Darts. After relegation from the Football League two years ago, Hereford United have had to cut their cloth accordingly. The club struggled to pay wages on time in April and May and have lately asked fans how to spend money from potential new investors. Chairman, David Keyte has overseen an urgent tax bill settled, a drop in attendances and the loss of Football League funding.

On the field Martin Foyle remains in charge and has had to deal with the departures of Bowman and influential midfielder Sam Clucas. After one of the biggest turnover of players in the summer, the Bulls have made home form count losing once in six matches at Edgar Street. Wins against Tamworth, Welling United and Lincoln City have all been narrow whilst draws versus Braintree Town and Luton Town have added to the points tally.

However, Hereford United have tasted victory just once in eight games with their recent failure away at Macclesfield Town. Silkman’s Connor Jennings scored the winner in the 62nd minute, making it six in five games for the 22 year old. Hereford United were unable to level the match which was not helped by Sam Smith’s dismissal for violent conduct. The defeat follows a loss by the same scoreline to league leaders Cambridge United on the weekend. The Bulls have not managed a goal in their last three outings.

Team News

Tyrone Sterling, Matt Fry and Adam Birchall are still sidelined through injury. Josh Hill is looking to regain match fitness whilst Mat Mitchel-King returned to action in the week completing a full 90 minutes. Striker, Jason Prior couldn’t finish Tuesday night’s draw due to an ankle problem, he managed just half an hour of football. Prior’s injury means Matthew Godden looks set to start his second game with the club. Elliot Bradbrook is still one caution away from suspension.

Kingsley James missed the mid week action for Hereford United after picking up a knock last weekend. O’Keefe, who scored the winning goal last season is recovery from injury along with Joel Edwards and Michael Rankine. Sam Smith’s red card in Tuesday’s defeat at Macclesfield Town means he will start his suspension.
